What is the ITAR?

ITAR stands for the International Traffic in Arms Regulations and is a set of rules put forth by the United States government.  These rules monitor the import and export of defense related articles and services.  The ITAR states that no defense or military technology can be shared with foreign entities unless the Department of State issues an allowance or a special exemption.  The ITAR is handled by the Department of State.

What is the EAR?

EAR stands for Export Administration Regulations, and encompasses the regulations enforced by the United States Government, which control the export and re-export of most commercial related products.  Included in the EAR are the 'Ten General Prohibitions', which are rules that must be met before the exportation of any commercial item can occur.  The EAR is handled by the Department of Commerce.
